What Is a Push-Back Pallet Rack?

Like any pallet rack, a push-back system stores multiple pallets. However, unlike systems which use static storage, push-back racks have some automated storage and delivery features.

When you place a pallet on a push-back rack, it sits on a cart in an inclined rolling rail system. When you put the next pallet on the rack, it pushes the first pallet cart back a space. This push-back placement continues until you have filled the rack.

This system also works in reverse when you remove pallets. When you take the front pallet off the rack, the pallet carts behind it will roll forward along their rails. The next pallet is then in position at the front for your next order pick.

Why Use Push-Back Pallet Racks?

If you use traditional pallet racks, then you will spend more time putting pallets on the rack and removing them. You have to spend time organizing the placement of your pallets by using different aisles. Plus, your drivers will have to spend more time driving around to store and remove items because they will need to use different access points.

Push-back systems simplify and speed up this process. It's easier to store pallets as your drivers can fill a rack from one position. Pallets will then automatically move into the easiest removal position as you remove items from their rack. You can run a last-in-first-out system.

This system also increases storage capacity in your available space. You don't need as many aisles in your system because your drivers can always pick items from the front face of a rack. You can store pallets on both sides of a rack; they will all be automatically delivered to their entry/exit point.

You also reduce your forklift costs here. If you have to store or remove a pallet at the back of a rack, then you might need some models with an extra-long reach. If you use a push-back system, then you only need to buy regular forklifts. You always work from the front of the rack.
